General H2S Training Questions

What is H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) Awareness?

H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) awareness is a training program for workers who may be affected by H2S hazards involved in procedures, or implementing those procedures in site-specific workplace programs that may expose them to H2S hazards.

Do I need an H2S Awareness course?

Everyone in the workplace that uses, might use or might be exposed to H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) gas needs to have general awareness training to help them recognize H2S gas hazards and what they can do to mitigate the danger this gas presents to their workplace and their safety.

General training, such as this course, will cover the general legislation, and the responsibilities of each role in regards to working with or being exposed to H2S in the workplace.

How often do I need H2S Awareness Training?

It's recommended to complete this training every 3 years.

Training should be repeated when there are significant changes to the policy or program or when circumstances indicate training should be repeated such as policy or procedures are not being followed.

How can we comply with the Regulations?

  1. Identify and assess hazards that may require H2S awareness training.
  2. Develop an HEC program, dealing with your workplace H2S requirements.
  3. Provide employee education and training on H2S awareness and the site-specific H2S programs.
  4. Ensure the H2S programs are being followed correctly.
  5. Evaluate and monitor the program and its usage in the workplace.
  6. Implement any preventative and corrective measures as needed.
  7. Assess any changes made for efficacy.
  8. Provide update training for any affected employees.

If I change employers/jobs, do I have to retrain?

The onus is on the employer to ensure that his or her staff is properly trained for the job. Because you can never be too sure of previous training, it's recommended that new employees take a H2S course, including site-specific training.

Can I take this course as an individual?

Absolutely! If you are taking this course as an individual, simply enter your name in the area for "Company Name".

Can I take one of YOW's H2S courses and then train my own workers?

YOW Canada's H2S course is not intended or designed for trainers and we do not recommend that it be used to train a trainer. In order to reap the full benefits of this course we recommend that each trainee complete a H2S course themselves. This also ensures that each employee receives a H2S certificate.

Who signs my certificate?

The “employer” signature should be signed by the direct supervisor of the employee. The “employee” signature should be signed by the actual trainee. If you are self-employed you must sign as both the “employee” and the “employer”.

What needs to be included in a H2S training program?

Both general and site-specific training are required.

YOW's H2S Course is general training that covers the legislation, how to recognize hazards and how to address them.

Practical site-specific training is also required to cover the particular workplace devices, and the site-specific policy and procedures.

Does YOW Canada's H2S Awareness course meet all the provincial training requirements across Canada?

Yes, our H2S Awareness training course was designed to meet the provincial, and where applicable, the federal training requirements across Canada.
