General Fall Protection Training Questions

What is Fall Protection

Most provinces have specific definitions of Fall Protection, however a few general examples are:

  • Hazard elimination through safe work practices,
  • Fall prevention with travel restraint systems and guardrails; and
  • Fall arrest through safety nets or fall arrest systems.

Do I need a Fall Protection Course?

Generally, if you are performing work with a fall hazard of over three meters all workers require training in fall protection.

General training (such as this course) will cover the legislation, recognizing the hazards and how they are assessed and the different methods of preventing a fall or arresting a fall should it occur.

Additionally all Fall Protection training should include some hands-on training with the safety equipment to be used, especially the donning of safety harnesses.

Workers with emergency rescue responsibilities will need additional training related to the rescue.

Who is responsible for Fall Protection training and Fall Protection education?

Regardless of the source of training or how it is provided to workers, the employer has the duty to ensure it is adequate to protect the health and safety of the workers who work in or around the fall hazard.

YOW Canada's Fall Protection Course is one method of training.

Additional 'hands-on' training on the specific equipment and procedures to be used will be required.

How often do I need Fall Protection Training?

General training must be given before anyone works at a height of over 3 meters (or 10 feet).

The training must be reviewed if there are any changes in the circumstances that may affect the safety of a worker or when provincial regulations require it.

Nova Scotia, for example, requires training every 3 years.

Consult with your industry's provincial safety association or Worker's Compensation Board for details on when re-certification is required. Click here to see a list of all the provincial Fall Protection Regulations.

How can we comply with the Regulations?

You need a Fall Protection Program that:

  1. Identifies fall hazards;
  2. Specifies the safe work practices that eliminate the hazards;
  3. Trains your employees in Fall Prevention and Fall Arrest; and
  4. Makes all employees aware of the details surrounding a 'written rescue plan' for each jobsite.

If I change employers/jobs, do I have to retrain?

The onus is on the employer to ensure that his or her staff is properly trained for the job. Because you can never be too sure of previous training, it's recommended that new employees take a FP course, including site-specific training.

Can I take this course as an individual?

Absolutely! If you are taking this course as an individual, simply enter your name in the area for "Company Name".

Can I take one of YOW's FP courses and then train my own workers?

YOW Canada's FP course is not intended or designed for trainers and we do not recommend that it be used to train a trainer. In order to reap the full benefits of this course we recommend that each trainee complete a FP course themselves. This also ensures that each employee receives a FP certificate.

Who signs my certificate?

The “employer” signature should be signed by the direct supervisor of the employee. The “employee” signature should be signed by the actual trainee. If you are self-employed you must sign as both the “employee” and the “employer”.

What needs to be included in a fall protection training program?

Both general and site-specific training are required.

YOW's Fall Protection Online Course is general training that covers the legislation, how to recognize fall hazards and how they are addressed.

Practical site specific training is also required to cover the particular equipment used to work safely and the specific response procedures for any emergency in the workplace.

Does YOW Canada's Fall Protection course meet all the provincial training requirements across Canada?

Our Fall Protection training course was designed to meet the general training requirements for most provinces across Canada. The only exceptions to this are Newfoundland and Labrador and some special circumstances in Ontario, as outlined below.

Newfoundland and Labrador: This online course is not valid for any worker who is required to use fall protection while working in NL. These workers are required to complete a minimum 2 day WorkplaceNL-approved “hands on” training course. Check with WorkplaceNL for details: workplacenl.ca

Ontario – "Construction Projects": This online course is not valid for Ontario workers who work on "Construction Projects". If you work on Construction Projects in Ontario, you are required to complete “Working at Heights” (WAH) training which as mandated by the Ontario Ministry of Labour.

YOW Canada no longer provides WAH training, you can contact one of our Blended Learning Training Partners or visit the MOL's website to find a training provider near you.

More information is available at: labour.gov.on.ca

Ontario – "Other Sectors": Ontario workers who work in other Provincially or Federally designated sectors (i.e. the industrial sector), this online FP training is valid.

Do I need additional training?

In some cases yes, but this depends on your exact working circumstances. Sometimes general training must be followed up with site specific or hands-on training with the safety equipment to be used at your workplace. This training is often completed by the employer, supervisor or a competent person on-site. YOW Canada’s training certificates include a section to fill-out and initial for any site specific training delivered, particularly for donning of a harness and any other site specific equipment such as - scaffolds, ladders, Power Elevated Work Platforms and any other special equipment used while working at heights.

Also, workers with emergency rescue responsibilities will need additional training related to rescue.
