General Working at Heights Training Questions

What is Working at Heights?

"Working at Heights" (WAH) in Ontario applies to people working on "Construction Projects" who are exposed to fall hazards.

Is YOW’s WAH training government approved?

Yes. YOW Canada’s blended-learning Working at Heights program has been approved by the Chief Prevention Officer of the Ontario Ministry of Labour ( MOL #PRO-34687) as required by law.

What does CPO mean?

CPO stands for "Chief Prevention Officer" of the Ontario Ministry of Labour. The CPO is responsible for establishing training standards and approving training programs and providers.

What is Blended Learning?

Blended learning combines online delivery (for Part 1: Basic Theory) with face-to-face delivery (for Part 2: Practical Learning) to allow learners more control over their learning process and to be more engaged.

The blended learning approach of “telling, showing, and then doing” has proven to be very effective in learning and retaining knowledge, particularly in adult learning.

Benefits of Blended Learning for Learners

There are a number of benefits to using YOW Canada’s WAH blended learning course:

  • Enhanced learning and knowledge retention results in safer work and fewer on the job injuries for Learners
  • Learners can take Part 1 online training anytime, from any device, and from anywhere with an internet connection to suit personal and professional schedules
  • Online learning is interactive and uses a variety of media (for example text, images, scenario’s, exercises) to enhance Learner engagement
  • Learners control the pace at which they learn, and can retake less understood topics
  • Learners with questions about Part 1 topics can contact one of YOW’s certified Trainers in real time using phone, chat or email Learners can ask questions about Part 1 topics privately (we welcome basic questions!)
  • Enabling Part 1 to be taken online and separately means that Learners are fresh and focused for Part 2 delivery, which is not the case with full day classroom delivery courses
  • Learners can access Part 1: Basic Theory training at any time after training completion

Benefits of Blended Learning for Employers

  • Enhanced safety compliance reduces injuries, time away and non-compliance costs (for example fines)
  • Being able to take Part 1 training online (during downtime, evenings or weekends) means WAH Learners only have to be off the job site for half a day – limited impact on productivity and revenue
  • WAH certification (and recertification every 3 years) is a legal requirement. YOW’s Learner Management System enables tracking employee training effortlessly:
    • Monitor Learners status (certified, in-progress, etc.)
    • Monitor Learners certification date
    • Training expiration or retraining date
    • View and Print Learners certificates
    • Assign trainees to groups based on job function, location etc.
    • Send notification emails & reminders to multiple trainees
    • Instantly re-register expired trainees.
    • Download a training report for all active trainees.
    • View past orders
  • Flexible and Client Focused Customer Service
    • Sales Representatives and Subject Matter Experts are available to answer your questions
  • Flexible purchasing policy that allows courses to be purchased individually, or to be pre-purchased as unused courses do not expire
  • WAH training delivery in all major cities in Ontario
  • Training can be provided at your site, or just for your employees (for 8 or more employees)

Do I need a Working at Heights Course?

If you work on a “Construction Project” and are exposed to any fall hazards or use any of the following, then the answer is YES!:

  • Travel restraint systems
  • Fall restricting systems
  • Fall arrest systems
  • Safety nets
  • Work belts or safety belts

This training will cover the legislation, recognizing the hazards and how they are assessed and the different methods of preventing a fall or arresting a fall should it occur in a two part course.

Part 1 will focus on the theory and basics in working at Heights and fall prevention.

Part 2 will focus on practical training including some hands-on training with the safety equipment to be used, especially the donning of safety harnesses.

Workers with emergency rescue responsibilities will need additional training related to the rescue.

Who is responsible for Working at Heights training and Working at Heights education?

The employer has the duty to ensure workers who work in or around fall hazards are adequately trained.

In Ontario, only WAH training delivered by a CPO approved training provider is accepted.

How often do I need Working at Heights Training?

Every 3 years following the initial training. Workers will be required to complete a half day “refresher” training program delivered by a CPO approved training provider.

If I change employers/jobs, do I have to retrain?

No. Your WAH certificate of completion is CPO approved and is transferable from employer to employer. Your training certificate for WAH is issued to you personally (i.e. the certificate is independent of your employer).

Can I take YOW's Working at Heights course and then train my own workers in Working at Heights?

No, YOW Canada's Working at Heights program is not intended or designed for trainers and we do not recommend that it be used to train a trainer.

When will I get my certificate?

Your trainer will issue a signed wallet card at the end of the class, which is a valid training record. If you completed training after April 1st, 2019, your information will be automatically submitted to SkillsPass, the record management system used by the Ontario Ministry of Labour. You will then receive an email from SkillsPass with instructions on how to access or set-up your account and access your digital records.

If you completed training prior to April 1st, 2019, you can go to the following site to set-up and link your account: https://cms.bluedrop.io/client/mol-link-account/. You will be required to fill out an Account Link form to ensure access to your accurate digital training records. If you have questions or wish to correct spelling errors, please email support@myskillspass.com.

Please note that the Ontario Ministry of Labour no longer prints and mails CPO training cards as they are now available digitally through SkillsPass.

How can I get a replacement certificate?

You can access, view, print and share your training record online 24/7 through SkillsPass at: https://myskillspass.com/client/msp/skillspass/.

Alternatively, YOW Canada can issue and mail a replacement wallet card, simply call 1.866.688.2845 during regular business hours (Mon-Fri, 9-5).
